What is a prerequisite outcome?

A prerequisite outcome is a learning outcome that should already be in place before another outcome can be learned. For example, operations with fractions can be a prerequisite for ratio and proportion. When those links are known, the reason for a weak outcome can be looked for further back; but what is found is a likely source, not a diagnosis.

How Measura uses it

In Measura the prerequisite map points to a likely source of a weak outcome: “9 students are weak on ratio and proportion; likely prerequisite: operations with fractions.” The suggestion is labelled “likely”, and the decision is the teacher’s.
